Review 183 was The Beatles where I explained I don’t have the universal love for them that most do. As a result, I have never listened to a Beatles solo album, I’m sure there are some that are unbelievable, of course there will be, but with the amount of music I listen to, unless I am asked to, I doubt I ever will listen to one.
So, the first album I have ever listened to that has the name Lennon on the cover is this one, Friendly Fire.
Although heavily involved in music Lennon is seemingly reluctant to release solo albums under his own name, I cannot comment on his other records, but Friendly Fire is a lovely little record.
Ten tracks, nine written by Lennon with a cover of a Marc Bolan song thrown in for good measure.
The album opens with a single piano before a strummed guitar and Lennon comes in, his voice is not his father’s and reminded me of someone but for the life of me I could not think who. Then I was in driving with my phone on shuffle and the Boo Radleys came on. Him and Sice sound similar to me. Dead Meat is a strong opener.
This is a record that does not have a bad song on it but also does not have an exceptional one either. Each song is mid-paced, there’s no rocking out here and acoustic guitar and piano are essentials for him.
After the first listen I thought, aye its okay, nothing more, second listen I decided the title track was a wee gem as it builds to the chorus and third listen I decided this in not an album to dip in and out of but enjoy as a whole but importantly, for me, I would have to be in the right mood. Possibly a bit down, fed up and needing laid-back music to wash over me. I am writing this the night after Scotland have been knocked out of the Euros so perfect timing.
Parachute and Spectacle are beautifully produced and engaging and Headlights I like the handclaps and solo towards the end but Tomorrow sound like a demo to me.
Sean Lennon is always going to be compared to his father, we all know it, I’m sure he knows it, but he should be proud of this record, and it won’t change your life, but I’d give it a go if you haven’t heard it.

Thank you Steve for taken on my recommendation ❤️
The entire album is accompanied with a video, and together creates a beautiful film.

I love this album and have looped this album over and over through the years. Its craftsmanship in Production and Sean's songwriting and ear worm melodies are so subtle and rich.
This an all time favourite album for me.
Its influences and inspirations must come from such a personal place that I could only imagine just one other person in this world could truly comprehend; his own Brother, Julian.
A love letter I would say, to a childhood, to a parent, that a Son has had to share with the world through the public eye.
A concept album, and mini movie, as equally playful as…
