236) Amyl and The Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness

Hard to believe but I am not the youngster I once was, I am fifty-four shortly and the music I listen to is mainly from the past. So far, the only records I have bought this years from new bands are House of All and Everlasting Yeah. House of All contain many members of The Fall and Everlasting Yeah are all ex-members of That Petrol Emotion so I know what I am doing (both quality if you fancy a purchase).

I’m on Apple Music as daughter has to many playlists so “dad you cannot stop paying for this and join Spotify,” notice the words “you cannot stop paying for this,” yes, she is the boss, well she thinks she is. I am cunning as the boss, so cunning no one notices. If you are on Apple each week, they recommend New Music and they had selected U Should Not Be Doing That by Amyl and The Sniffers, I’d heard of them so why not, it’s only three minutes.

Heavy bass, a wee riff and attitude from the off, I thought nah that can’t be that good and played it again, I was wrong (please, I know), it really was that good.

Amyl is on the front cover having to be edited for her appearance and the opening lines of Jerkin contain the words c**t and asshole, but she is readying herself for stardom. She is confident and assured and magic.

Chewing Gum has it all, catchy as hell (or probably as f**k if Amyl were writing this) as the band back this lady to the hilt all shouty and tight.

Tiny Bikini she tells us she wants to just wear one and why should she not before we have the beauty of Big Dreams, she is the star that’s clear but the band back her with a lovely, restrained performance before all four step up at the two minute mark, should be massive.

The band have not left their punk roots behind as It’s Mine, Motorbike Song, Pigs, Do It Do It all prove.

Doing in Me Head has one of those riffs and drum patterns that lodge in your head and wonderful hey hey shout outs, ah so good to be reminded of The Ramones and Bailing On Me could be on any good Blondie record.

Me And The Girls has pop sensibilities, a swirling riff and distorted vocal without losing the bands edge.

However, forget The Ramones and Blondie this is a band realising this is their moment and they are taking it, Amyl is going to be huge and based on this record her and the band deserve everything they get.

8/10
